Accessing the New York Times through UW-Madison

UW-Madison students, faculty, and staff have free access to The New York Times Digital (NYTimes.com) through the UW-Madison Libraries. Register for access and create an account by following the steps below.

Register for The New York Times Digital: Academic Pass

  1. Go to the NYTimes university access page (link opens in a new tab).
  2. In the Find School box, search for and select: University of Wisconsin Madison – Madison WI.
  3. Follow the instructions provided for on campus or off campus depending on your current location.
    • You will need to log in with your NetID to activate your academic pass.
  4. Create a NYTimes.com account using your @wisc.edu email or use a pre-existing account.
    • If you have an existing paid New York Times subscription, you must cancel it before it may be linked to your school’s program.

Access The New York Times Digital: Academic Pass

Once you have registered and created an account (see instructions above), you can access The New York Times Digital content by visiting NYTimes.com, or downloading the mobile app, and logging in with your NYTimes.com account. The university access page linked above is needed only to register for or renew access.   

Students will have access until they graduate. Faculty and staff will need to renew once every four years.

Access the New York Times through Databases

The New York Times is published in two formats: a print paper and online as New York Times Digital (NYTimes.com). The New York Times Digital includes access to some articles and content that are not available in the print paper and are exclusively digital. The Libraries offer online access to articles from the print paper through databases. These databases provide better search capabilities, and access to older or historical content (1923-1980), than does The New York Times Digital and are recommended for research needs.
