Using Google Scholar

This tutorial will explain how you can access the full-text of articles available from the UW-Madison Libraries through Google Scholar.

While you can search Google Scholar for free, it does not provide free access to all materials, or might not provide appropriate links to access library subscriptions. The UW-Madison Libraries pay subscription fees to hundreds of journal publishers so that you can use their articles. In order to avoid paying for articles you find on Google Scholar, you need to use links provided by the Libraries.

  • Look for the Find It @ UW-Madison link next to search results to access full text articles through the UW-Madison Libraries.
  • On-campus users will automatically see Find It @ UW-Madison links next to all results that have full text access.
  • Off-campus users will need to set your Library links preferences to show the Find It at UW-Madison links.

Note

Clicking the title of an article instead of Find It @ UW-Madison may not provide access to the full text.

To set Library links:

  1. Select the three lines in the upper left corner of the Google Scholar search page.
  2. Select “Settings”
  3. Select “Library links”
  4. Search for: Madison
  5. Check the boxes for “University of Wisconsin-Madison-Find It @ UW-Madison” and “UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON – ProQuest Fulltext”
  6. Select “Save”

Note

If you Sign In to Google and set Library links, this will save your settings for future use.

If an article in your Google Scholar results list does not include a Find It at UW-Madison link, check the Libraries Catalog for the journal title or book title, or request a copy through Interlibrary Loan.

Note: Google Scholar does not link to all scholarly literature. Some publishers and vendors do not allow Google Scholar to index their content.
